Blackheads: What They Are and How to Combat Them

Are you looking for effective ways to get rid of blackheads? From what causes them to how you can bid them goodbye, here’s everything you need to know about blackheads.

If you have ever had blackheads, you might know how frustrating and challenging it is to get rid of them. These pesky black dots are very common and can affect people of all ages and skin types. But what are blackheads, and what causes them?

What are blackheads?

Blackheads are a type of acne called open comedones. They appear as small, dark-coloured bumps on the skin. Blackheads don’t have a white or yellow pus-filled centre like other types of acne do. Instead, when exposed to air, they oxidise and become dark because they are made up of a mixture of bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells.

Blackheads form when the opening of a pore becomes clogged with sebum, oil, dead skin cells, and C. acnes(the bacteria that causes acne). The primary cause of blackheads is genetics. But, those who have combination or oily skin are more susceptible to them. The skin surrounding your nose, forehead, and chin has a high concentration of sebaceous glands, making it a goldmine for excess oil and, as a result, more prone to clogged pores.

How to combat blackheads?

Have you tried numerous blackhead removal remedies without much luck? I have compiled a list of the best—and least damaging—blackhead removal methods that will banish them instantly and give you smoother and clearer skin without irritating it:

  • Reach out for antioxidant-rich products

If you are struggling with these teensy dark spots on your face, I recommend incorporating antioxidant-rich skincare products into your skincare routine. These products can prevent oil and dirt in your pores from oxidising, which is one of the main causes of blackheads.

  • Exfoliate regularly

Since clogged pores are the root cause of blackheads, you need to exfoliate your face regularly to keep them at bay. It is advisable to exfoliate your skin once or twice a week. However, it is important to choose the right exfoliant to prevent skin damage. Physical exfoliants can be harsh on the skin, especially if used too frequently. Therefore, if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, I recommend opting for chemical exfoliants like alpha-hydroxy acids to clear out your pores.

  • Use products with salicylic acid

We all know that salicylic acid is the best solution for acne. So, if you are looking for ways to combat blackheads, salicylic acid should be your go-to ingredient. This beta-hydroxy acid dives deep into your pores and dissolves sebum and dead skin cells, thus clearing your pores. BHAs are also oil-soluble, making them an excellent choice for anyone with oily or acne-prone skin. I recommend adding it gradually to your skincare regimen to avoid skin irritation—you can start with a mild salicylic acid cleanser.

  • Apply retinoids

If you are struggling with severe acne and blackheads, retinoids are an excellent option. They can tighten your pores and make them appear smaller, thus making the blackheads invisible. Additionally, they promote skin turnover and decrease the stickiness of skin cells, preventing pores from becoming clogged.

  • Opt for a non-comedogenic SPF

Does your sunscreen sit on the top of your skin and make it look greasy? It is time to make the switch! Dead skin cells and dirt on the skin mix with excess oil and clog your pores, thus causing blackheads. To prevent this issue, you must opt for a non-comedogenic sunscreen that protects your skin from the sun without clogging your pores.
