Treat Dark Underarms

How to Treat Dark Underarms

Since your underarm skin is delicate, it is more susceptible to irritation and pigmentation. Furthermore, factors like lifestyle, hygiene, hormones, friction, and dietary habits can also contribute to dark armpits. While it is a common issue, having dark underarms can make you hesitant to wear sleeveless clothing or raise your arms with confidence. But fret not! I have compiled a list of some effective tips and tricks to treat dark underarms and regain your confidence.

Exfoliate regularly

If you want to treat dark underarms, it is imperative to exfoliate regularly because the accumulation of dead cells can darken the underarms over time. However, avoid vigorously scrubbing your underarms. Physical pressure has little to no benefit in alleviating hyperpigmentation; in fact, it is more likely to aggravate the condition. I recommend opting for a gentle and nourishing exfoliant. Or, you can introduce a chemical exfoliator into your skincare routine two to three times per week while avoiding any physical exfoliants with gritty particles to avoid causing microtears in the skin.

Optimise your shaving routine

Did you know shaving is one of the biggest culprits behind dark underarms? So, if you want bright and smooth underarms, it is crucial to optimise your shaving routine. If you shave to remove hair under your arms, I recommend using shaving cream to help reduce friction because it can stress the skin, causing an inflammatory reaction and hyperpigmentation. Furthermore, allow the shaving cream to sit on your skin for 15-30 seconds before shaving, and replace your razor blades regularly to avoid dull blades scraping against your skin. After shaving, use a post-shave lotion or moisturiser to help soothe your skin.

Chemical peels

If you want to rejuvenate your underarm skin and get rid of underarm pigmentation, you must try a chemical peel. Chemical peels use alpha-hydroxy acids and beta-hydroxy acids to exfoliate the skin. They can aid in the removal of pigmented skin that sits at the top of the dermis. The shedding of the outermost skin layer causes the layer underneath to come to the surface. This procedure also boosts collagen formation and gives you a more youthful and lighter-toned skin surface. But, since your underarm skin is very delicate, it is crucial to use a gentle chemical peel and not overdo it. I recommend a lactic acid or glycolic acid peel to treat dark underarms without irritating your skin.

Glutathione injections

Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that our bodies make and is made up of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamate, and glycine. The Glutathione injections are one of the best ingredients to treat dark underarms due to their brightening properties. It aids in the detoxification and removal of free radicals, which are known to cause cell damage. Glutathione lightens discolouration by deactivating the enzyme tyrosinase, which helps produce the pigment and gives your dark armpits a boost of radiance.
