Everything You Need To Know About Cellulite

Cellulite is a very common, harmless skin condition that causes lumpy, dimpled flesh on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen. The condition is most prevalent in women. Between 80 and 90 percent of women may experience cellulite at some point in their lives.

Cellulite refers to the puckered appearance of skin when fatty tissue pushes through the fibrous bands, called septae, that connect skin to muscle. These bands “pull down and tether the skin, and that’s what leads to the dimpled appearance of cellulite or ‘orange peel skin.’

Grades of Cellulite

There are three grades of cellulite appearance:

  1. Grade 1: You have smooth skin while laying down and standing up also called Orange Peel Skin due to its appearance.
  2. Grade 2: You have smooth skin while laying down, but some dimpling appears while standing also called Cottage Cheese appearance, and the skin appears moderately draped.
  3. Grade 3: Dimpling appears while you are standing and laying down also called “mattress” appearance, with 10 or more deep depressions, and the skin is severely draped.

Causes

The exact cause of cellulite is unknown, but it appears to result from an interaction between the connective tissue in the dermatological layer that lies below the surface of the skin, and the layer of fat that is just below it.

Some common factors appear to be linked to the chance of having cellulite:

  1. Hormonal factors and age: Hormonal factors play a large role in the development of cellulite, and genetics determine skin structure, skin texture and body type. Age also causes the skin to becomes less elastic, thinner, and more likely to sag. This increases the chance of cellulite developing.
  2. Genetics: Genetic factors can be linked to a person’s speed of metabolism, distribution of fat under the skin, ethnicity, and circulatory levels. These can affect the chance of cellulite development.
  3. Dietary and lifestyle changes: People who eat too much fat, carbohydrates, and salt and too little fiber are likely to have greater amounts of cellulite.
  4. Other factors include weight gain or weight loss, a poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle, and smoking. Wearing tight clothing and frequent sitting can also contribute to the formation of cellulite.

  • Healthy diet: A diet rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and a good balance and variety of all the food groups will provide the body and skin with all it needs.
  • Exercise– Perform 20 minutes of aerobic exercise and 20 minutes of strength training two or three days a week, paired with a healthy diet can really help with cellulite.
  • Massage: Massage may reduce cellulite by improving lymphatic drainage. It can also help stretch your skin tissue. This may help stretch out cellulite dimples, too.
  • Dry Brushing: Dry brushing helps stimulate blood and lymph flow in the body. This is something you can — and should — be doing daily, even twice a day before your shower.
  • Body Scrub– Coffee scrubs can be beneficial in reducing cellulite as well as coconut oil. The massage and exfoliation benefit the skin by stimulating blood/lymph flow and the caffeine in the coffee have a tightening effect. By massaging this trifecta onto any problem area, you’ll stimulate blood flow resulting in smoother, firmer skin
  • Products with Retinol and Caffeine: It exfoliates the skin and it helps build the collagen and would make the skin look firmer. Caffeine is in almost every cellulite-reducing product that shows any benefit, it helps blood flow to the skin and works as a diuretic.
